Old Lights. The term Old Light emerged in New England during the Great Awakening (1740–1743) to describe the socially and theologically conservative opponents of George Whitefield and the mass revivals he inspired. In judging the fruits of the revivals, Old Lights denied that the Great Awakening was a work of God, claiming instead that it destroyed the peace and unity of the church by pitting enthusiastic lay people and itinerant preachers against the established clergy of New England. The Old Light
