Frontier Religion. A term loosely applied to popular Protestantism of the Second Great Awakening as it developed in the trans-Allegheny West during the first decades of the nineteenth century. In this context the frontier is not viewed so much as unsettled territory as it is a process. Beginning with the Atlantic coast and moving westward, pioneers found it necessary to accommodate to the natural environment and harsh conditions of frontier life.
