Theyaj came to the other side of the sea, to the region of the Gerasenes.B 2 As soon as he got out of the boat, a man with an uncleanak spirital came out of the tombsam and met him. 3 He lived in the tombs,an and no one was able to restrain him anymore—not even with a chainao—4 because he often had been bound with shackles and chains, but had torn the chains apart and smashedap the shackles. No one was strong enough to subdueaq him. 5 Nightar and day among the tombsas and on the mountains,at he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.
When he saw Jesus from a distance, he ran and knelt down before him. 7 And he cried out with a loud voice, “What do you have to do with me, Jesus, Sonau of the Most High God?av I beg you before God, don’t tormentaw me!” 8 For he had told him, “Come out of the man, you uncleanax spirit!”ay
“What is your name?” he asked him.
“My name is Legion,”az he answered him, “because we are many.” 10 And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the region.
A large herd of pigsba was there, feedingbb on the hillside. 12 The demonsC begged him, “Send us to the pigs, so that we may enter them.” 13 So he gave them permission, and the uncleanbc spiritsbd came out and entered the pigs. The herd of about two thousand rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned there.
The men who tended themD ran offbe and reported it in the town and the countryside, and people went to see what had happened. 15 They came to Jesus and saw the man who had been demon-possessed,bfbg sitting there, dressed and in his right mind;bh and they were afraid.bi 16 Those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessedbj man and told about the pigs. 17 Then they began to beg him to leave their region.
As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been demon-possessed begged him earnestly that he might remain with him. 19 Jesus did not let him but told him, “Go home to your own people, and report to them how much the Lorda has doneb for you and how he has had mercy on you.” 20 So he went out and began to proclaimc in the Decapolisd how much Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed.e
A GIRL RESTORED AND A WOMAN HEALED
Whenf Jesus had crossed over again by boatA to the other side, a large crowdg gathered around him while he was by the sea. 22 One of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus,h came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feeti 23 and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands onj her so that she can get wellB,k and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him, and a large crowd was following and pressing against him.
Now a woman suffering from bleedingl for twelve years 26 had enduredm much under many doctors.n She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse. 27 Having heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touchedo his clothing.p 28 For she said, “If I just touch his clothes, I’ll be made well.”q 29 Instantly her flow of blood ceased, and she sensed in her body that she was healedr of her affliction.
Immediately Jesus realized that powers had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowdt and said, “Who touched my clothes?”u
His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’ ”
But he was looking around to see who had done this. 33 The woman, with fear and trembling, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell downv before him, and told him the whole truth.w 34 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faithx has saved you.y Go in peace and be healedz from your affliction.”aa
While he was still speaking, people came from the synagogue leader’s house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Why bother the teacherab anymore?”
When Jesus overheardC what was said, he told the synagogue leader, “Don’t be afraid.ac Only believe.” 37 He did not let anyone accompany him except Peter,ad James,ae and John,af James’s brother. 38 They came to the leader’s house, and he saw a commotion—people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and weeping?ag The childah is not dead but asleep.”ai 40 They laughed at him, but he put them all outside. He took the child’s father,aj mother, and those who were with him, and entered the place where the child was. 41 Then he took the childak by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum”D (which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, get up”al). 42 Immediately the girl got upam and began to walk.an (She was twelve years old.) At this they were utterly astounded.ao 43 Then he gave them strict orders that no one should know about thisap and told them to give her something to eat.
About Christian Standard BibleThe Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others. The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today. The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths. The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible. |
