it yields fruit for itself.
The more his fruit increased,
the more he increased the altars.x
The better his land produced,
the better they made the sacred pillars.y
2 Their hearts are devious;C,z
now they must bear their guilt.aa
The Lord will break down their altarsab
and demolish their sacred pillars.
3 In fact, they are now saying,
“We have no king!
For we do not fear the Lord.ac
What can a king do for us?”
taking false oaths while making covenants.ad
So lawsuits break out
like poisonous weeds in the furrows of a field.ae
5 The residents of Samariaaf will have anxiety
over the calfag of Beth-aven.ah
Indeed, its idolatrous priests rejoiced over it;
the people will mourn over it,
over its glory.ai
It will certainly go into exile.
6 The calf itself will be taken to Assyriaaj
as an offering to the great king.D,ak
Ephraim will experience shame;al
Israel will be ashamed of its counsel.am
7 Samaria’s king will disappearE,an
like foamF on the surface of the water.
8 The high placesao of Aven, the sin of Israel,ap
will be destroyed;
thorns and thistles will grow over their altars.aq
They will say to the mountains,ar “Cover us!”
and to the hills, “Fall on us!”as
ISRAEL’S DEFEAT BECAUSE OF SIN
9 Israel, you have sinned
since the days of Gibeah;at
they have taken their stand there.
Will not war against the unjust
overtake them in Gibeah?
10 I will disciplineau them at my discretion;av
nations will be gathered against them
to put them in bondageA
for their double iniquity.a
11 Ephraim is a well-trained calfb
that loves to thresh,
but I will place a yoke onB her fine neck.c
I will harness Ephraim;d
Judah will plow;
Jacob will do the final plowing.
12 Sow righteousness for yourselvese
and reap faithful love;
break up your unplowed ground.f
It is time to seek the Lordg
until he comesh and sends righteousness
on you like the rain.i
13 You have plowed wickedness and reaped injustice;j
you have eaten the fruit of lies.k
Because you have trusted in your own wayC
and in your large number of soldiers,l
14 the roar of battle will rise against your people,
and all your fortifications will be demolishedm
in a day of war,
like Shalman’s destruction of Beth-arbel.
Mothers will be dashed to pieces
along with their children.n
15 So it will be done to you, Bethel,o
because of your extreme evil.
At dawn the king of Israel will be totally destroyed.
11 When Israel was a child, I loved him,p
and out of Egypt I called my son.q
2 Israel called to the Egyptiansr
even as Israel was leaving them.D
They kept sacrificing to the Baalss
and burning offerings to idols.t
3 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk,u
but they never knew that I healed them.w
4 I led them with human cords,
with ropes of love.x
To them I was like one
who eases the yoke from their jaws;y
I bent down to give them food.z
5 Israel will not return to the land of Egypt
and Assyria will be his king,aa
because they refused to repent.ab
6 A sword will whirl through his cities;ac
it will destroy and devour the bars of his gates,G,ad
because of their schemes.ae
7 My people are bent on turning from me.af
Though they call to him on high,
he will not exalt them at all.
8 How can I give you up, Ephraim?ag
How can I surrender you, Israel?
How can I make you like Admah?ah
How can I treat you like Zeboiim?ai
I have had a change of heart;
my compassion is stirred!
9 I will not vent the full fury of my anger;aj
I will not turn back to destroy Ephraim.ak
For I am God and not man,
the Holy One among you;al
I will not come in rage.H
10 They will follow the Lord;am
he will roar like a lion.an
When he roars,
his children will come trembling from the west.ao
11 They will be roused like birds from Egypt
and like dovesap from the land of Assyria.aq
Then I will settle them in their homes.ar
This is the Lord’s declaration.
12 Ephraim surrounds me with lies,as
the house of Israel, with deceit.
Judah still wanders with God
and is faithful to the holy ones.I
GOD’S CASE AGAINST JACOB’S HEIRS
and pursues the east wind.au
He continually multiplies lies and violence.
He makes a covenant with Assyria,av
and olive oil is carried to Egypt.aw
2 The Lord also has a dispute with Judah.
He is about to punish Jacob according to his conduct;a
he will repay him based on his actions.
3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel,b
and as an adult he wrestled with God.c
4 Jacob struggled with the angel and prevailed;
he wept and sought his favor.d
He found him at Bethel,e
and there he spoke with him.A,f
5 The Lord is the God of Armies;
the Lord is his name.g
6 But you must return to your God.h
Maintain love and justice,i
and always put your hope in God.j
7 A merchant loves to extortk
with dishonest scales in his hands.l
“How rich I have become;m
I made it all myself.
In all my earnings,
no one can find any iniquity in men
that I can be punished for!”B
9 I have been the Lord your God
ever sinceC the land of Egypt.o
I will make you live in tents again,p
as in the festival days.
10 I will speak through the prophetsq
and grant many visions;
I will give parables through the prophets.r
11 Since Gilead is full of evil,s
they will certainly come to nothing.
They sacrifice bulls in Gilgal;t
even their altars will be like piles of rocksu
on the furrows of a field.
FURTHER INDICTMENT OF JACOB’S HEIRS
12 Jacob fled to the territory of Aram.v
Israel worked to earn a wife;w
he tended flocks for a wife.x
13 The Lord brought Israel from Egypt by a prophet,y
and Israel was tended by a prophet.
14 Ephraim has provoked bitter anger,z
so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on himaa
and repay him for his contempt.ab
13 When Ephraim spoke,ac there was trembling;
he was exalted in Israel.ad
But he incurred guilt through Baalae and died.
and make themselves a cast image,af
idols skillfully made from their silver,ag
all of them the work of craftsmen.ah
People say about them,
“Let the men who sacrificeD kiss the calves.”ai
3 Therefore, they will be like the morning mist,aj
like the early dew that vanishes,
like chaff blown from a threshing floor,ak
or like smoke from a window.al
4 I have been the Lord your Godam
ever sinceE the land of Egypt;
you know no God but me,an
and no Savior exists besides me.ao
5 I knewF you in the wilderness,ap
in the land of drought.
they became satisfied;aq
they were satisfied,
and their hearts became proud.ar
Therefore they forgot me.as
7 So I will be like a lionat to them;
I will lurk like a leopardau on the path.
like a bear robbed of her cubs
and tear open the rib cage over their hearts.
I will devour them there like a lioness,av
like a wild beast that would rip them open.
10 Where now is your king,H,ax
that he may save you in all your cities,
and theI rulersJ,ay you demanded, saying,
“Give me a king and leaders”?
11 I give you a king in my angeraz
and take away a king in my wrath.a
12 Ephraim’s guilt is preserved;
his sin is stored up.b
13 Labor pains come on him.c
He is not a wise son;d
when the time comes,
14 I will ransom them from the power of Sheol.
I will redeemB them from death.f
Death, where are your barbs?
Sheol, where is your sting?g
Compassion is hidden from my eyes.h
15 Although he flourishes among his brothers,C,i
an east wind will come,j
a wind from the Lord rising up from the desert.
His water source will fail,
and his spring will run dry.k
The windD will plunder the treasuryl
of every precious item.
16 Samariam will bear her guiltn
because she has rebelled against her God.o
They will fall by the sword;p
their children will be dashed to pieces,q
and their pregnant women ripped open.r
14 Israel, return to the Lord your God,s
for you have stumbled in your iniquity.t
2 Take words of repentance with youu
and return to the Lord.
Say to him, “Forgive all our iniquity
and accept what is good,
so that we may repay you
3 Assyria will not save us,w
we will not ride on horses,x
and we will no longer proclaim, ‘Our gods!’y
to the work of our hands.z
For the fatherless receives compassion in you.”aa
4 I will heal their apostasy;ab
I will freely love them,ac
for my anger will have turned from him.ad
5 I will be like the dew to Israel;ae
he will blossom like the lilyaf
and take root like the cedars of Lebanon.ag
6 His new branches will spread,
and his splendor will be like the olive tree,ah
his fragrance, like the forest of Lebanon.ai
7 The people will return and live beneath his shade.aj
They will grow grainak
and blossom like the vine.
His renown will be like the wine of Lebanon.
8 Ephraim, why should IG have anything more
to do with idols?al
It is I who answer and watch over him.
I am like a flourishing pine tree;am
your fruit comes from me.an
9 Let whoever is wiseao understand these things,
and whoever is insightful recognize them.
For the ways of the Lord are right,ap
and the righteous walk in them,aq
but the rebellious stumble in them.ar

About Christian Standard BibleThe Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others. The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today. The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths. The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible. |
