THE TWILIGHT OF LIFE

12 So remember your Creator in the days of your youth:

Before the days of adversity come,

and the years approach when you will say,e

“I have no delight in them”;

before the sun and the light are darkened,f

and the moon and the stars,

and the clouds return afterA the rain;

on the day when the guardians of the house tremble,

and the strong men stoop,

the women who grind grain cease because they are few,

and the ones who watch through the windows see dimly,g

the doors at the street are shut

while the sound of the mill fades;h

when one rises at the sound of a bird,

and all the daughters of song grow faint.

Also, they are afraid of heights and dangers on the road;

the almond tree blossoms,

the grasshopper loses its spring,B

and the caper berry has no effect;

for the mere mortal is headed to his eternal home,i

and mourners will walk around in the street;j

before the silver cord is snapped,C

and the gold bowl is broken,k

and the jar is shattered at the spring,

and the wheel is broken into the well;

and the dust returns to the earth as it once was,

and the spirit returns to God who gave it.l

“Absolute futility,” says the Teacher. “Everything is futile.”m

THE TEACHER’S OBJECTIVES AND CONCLUSION

In addition to the Teacher being a wise man, he constantly taught the people knowledge; he weighed, explored, and arranged many proverbs.n 10 The Teacher sought to find delightful sayings and write words of truth accurately. 11 The sayings of the wise are like cattle prods,o and those from masters of collections are like firmly embedded nails.p The sayings are given by one Shepherd.D

12 But beyond these, my son, be warned: there is no end to the making of many books,q and much study wearies the body.r 13 When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter is this: fear Gods and keep his commands, because this is for allE humanity.t 14 For God will bring every act to judgment,u including every hidden thing, whether good or evil.

About Christian Standard Bible

The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a highly trustworthy, faithful translation that is proven to be the optimal blend of accuracy and readability. It’s as literal to the original as possible without sacrificing clarity. The CSB is poised to become the translation that pastors rely on and Bible readers turn to again and again to read and to share with others.

The CSB is an original translation: more than 100 scholars from 17 denominations translated directly from the best available Hebrew, Greek and Aramaic source texts into English. Its source texts are the standard used by scholars and seminaries today.

The CSB is trustworthy: the conservative, evangelical scholars of the CSB affirm the authority of Scripture as the inerrant Word of God and seek the highest level of faithfulness to the original and accuracy in their translation. These scholars and LifeWay, the non-profit ministry that stewards the CSB, also champion the Bible against cultural trends that would compromise its truths.

The CSB is clear: it is as literal a translation of the ancient source texts as possible, but, in the many places throughout Scripture where a word-for-word rendering might obscure the meaning for a modern audience, it uses a more dynamic translation. In all cases, the intent is to convey the original meaning of God’s Word as faithfully and as clearly as possible.
