This more or less anti-ecclesial posture has persisted in exegesis under the influence of such figures as Martin Dibelius and Rudolph Bultmann and their premise of a basic discontinuity between the preaching of Jesus and the post-Easter teachings and traditions of the Church. Even today the scientific exegete presumes that we cannot trust the plain sense of the biblical texts, because the original source traditions have somehow been overlaid with a veneer of Church dogmas and institutional concerns.
