Gareth Lee Cockerill Spicq once wrote: ‘the theology of Hebrews is nothing but a theology and a Christology of the Old Testament elaborated in light of the new faith’ (author’s translation).1 Can we, in accord with Spicq’s statement, explain Heb. 7:1–25 as consistent Christological exegesis of the Old Testament?2 Or must we assume that the author is dealing with speculation about a heavenly Melchizedek?
