The earliest use of “Son” for Jesus in the New Testament is found in what is usually regarded as a pre-Pauline kerygmatic fragment in Paul’s first letter, 1 Thessalonians 1:10: “to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” In a similar fragment (Rom 1:3–4) there is a double use of “Son”: the first may be Pauline and refer
