The question is complicated, for it is asked by implication from the viewpoint of modern historical thinking (e.g. of the sort that would ask whether Julius Caesar really crossed the Rubicon or George Washington the Delaware River). From that point of view the only answer which can be given to the question is meager indeed. a. The main reason for such an answer is that we have inherited in
