Jesus “became obedient to death—even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:8). To understand the cost of that obedience, one has to go to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus prayed the night before he was crucified. The prayers Jesus offered that night were sheer agony. In the garden Jesus wrestled with God’s will for his life and his death. “My Father,” he prayed, “if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me” (Matt. 26:39). Jesus knew what kind of cup it was, the cup of God’s wrath against sin. So if ever
