Paul’s overriding preoccupation in these two letters is that the truth should be faithfully guarded and handed on to others. He is deeply concerned for the future of the gospel, and for the younger pastors entrusted with its care and propagation.

The doctrine of creation has wide ramifications, as we have seen. It is the secret of developing a positive, world-affirming, grateful attitude to life, and of having a strong conscience which liberates us to enjoy the good gifts of the good Creator. Timothy is to point these things out to the brothers (6a). For what Paul teaches Timothy, Timothy must teach others also.18 Indeed, he is to ‘put these instructions before the brothers and sisters’ (NRSV), like
