encounter.147 The capstone (literally ‘head stone’, 7) is the last stone—the stone that will complete the building. Zechariah is told that Zerubbabel will bring out the capstone (in ceremonial style), amid cries of God bless it! God bless it! by the people (7b). That is, they will invoke God’s blessing on the completed temple, much as the crowds might cry ‘God save the King’ at a coronation.148 So at the heart of this vision is a strong endorsement of Zerubbabel as the divinely chosen temple builder.
