Ugaritic belongs to a family of languages called Semitic. This language family includes many languages, both modern and ancient, whose relationship to each other can be recognized by the common characteristics they share. All of these Semitic languages are presumed to have branched off from a common ancestor language, unimaginatively called Proto-Semitic.
