Is it accurate to say that at that moment, for whatever reason—legitimate or illegitimate—she hated me? We are friends; we care for one another. But when she stuck one of her barbs into my back, her love was eclipsed by her hatred. Is it possible to love and hate the same person at the same moment? Even more important, is it possible to hate someone so deeply that love is obscured—to a point of being a functional nonentity, even though a molecule of love may still exist for the person? If that is
