justification by faith provided the impetus for most phases of the Reformation. The observation of Martin Luther (A.D. 1483–1546) that a good theologian is one who rightly distinguishes between law and grace is still crucial to understanding the Bible. Peace with God, the cessation of conflict with the eternal God, is achieved only through justification by faith. This peace is an objective reality and status and not simply a subjective feeling of the inner man.
