Isaiah’s “song of the vineyard,” although not termed a riddle, is in the same general category, with the middle set out in 5:1–6 and its solution immediately following (Is 5:7; cf. Ez 15). Ezekiel acquired a certain reputation in this area (Ez 20:49). Samson’s riddle at his wedding feast is the best-known biblical riddle (Jgs 14). Probably it was a form of diversion used on such occasions (vv 12, 13). The riddle took the form of a couplet: “Out of the
