preceding passage (vv. 1–5); others place it in the next paragraph (vv. 5–12).12 I prefer the latter, because the theme of Jesus’ divine sonship stands at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end of this paragraph (see vv. 5, 9 [his Son], 10, 12).13 5. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. John begins this verse with an interrogative statement. He asks who this person is that conquers the world. John does not write, “Who is the victor over
