Though Paul has called the enumerated virtues “the fruit of the Spirit,” he now shifts the emphasis from the Spirit to Christ. That he is able to do this so readily is due to the fact that when the Spirit occupies the heart, so does Christ (Eph. 3:16, 17). Christ and the Spirit cannot be separated. “In the Spirit” Christ himself inhabits the inner selves of believers (Rom. 8:9, 10). Was not the Spirit given by Christ (John 15:26; 2 Cor. 3:17)?
