(1844–1913), Scottish theologian and polemicist, was born in Glasgow on 11 April 1844. He was orphaned at an early age; subsequent apprenticeship (out of economic necessity) to a bookbinder and postponement of his university entrance until the age of twenty-one suggest a Spartan adolescence.
