(1483–1546), German Reformer, stands at the headwaters of that vast movement of ecclesial and spiritual renewal known as the Reformation. He was born on 10 November 1483 in the Thuringian village of Eisleben. He was the son of Hans Luder, a copper miner, and his respectable wife, Margaret Ziegler. He was named Martin because he was baptized on 11 November, the feast day of St Martin of Tours.
