First, Jesus understood the Bible as one unfolding story of redemption or restoration that culminated in Him and making Him known. Now, Jesus shared this with the other Jews of His time. He probably didn’t tell the story really differently and He unfolds that story that is very much in keeping with His day. The key is that He sees that story as culminating not on the kind of Messiah they were looking for—that kind of Messiah that Cleopas and his friend were looking for that led them to be discouraged
