The name given to the earliest translation of the Hebrew Old Testament into Greek, made in approximately the third century B.C. in Alexandria, Egypt. Whereas the Septuagint generally agrees with the Hebrew text, there are striking divergencies between the Greek and Hebrew texts in first century B.C. fragments from Qumran, and in books like Samuel and Jeremiah. In the Septuagint the book of Jeremiah is one seventh shorter than in the present Hebrew version. These facts have raised questions.
