And this is precisely how most modern defenders of the Bible operate. One philosopy professor, for example, says that when studying the claims of the Bible, the “subjective* element” needs to be “offset as much as possible.” He admits that “biases can never be completely eliminated,” but he insists that we can know what happened in the past if we follow the evidence of history according to the rules. This is the way he argues for Christianity when debating non-Christians.2 This viewpoint is called
