KEY TO THE SIGNS USED IN THIS BIBLE

The pronunciation adopted in this Bible, and the diacritical marks used to express it, are based (by arrangement with the publishers, G. and C. Merriam and Co.) on Webster’s International Dictionary (latest edition). This will be found a great convenience, as Webster’s marks are more or less familiar to almost every reader.

To make the system of pronunciation as thorough as possible, every syllable of the Proper Names is indicated, and every vowel is diacritically marked. Further, those consonants are also marked which are capable of more than one pronunciation.

Syllables are indicated by a hyphen (-), while those on which stress has to be laid are marked with an accent (′). In the case of compound names as given in the Authorized Version, the proper accent of each name is given where necessary, and the component parts indicated by a double hyphen (–).
