Bonhoeffer goes so far as to say that cheap grace is the mortal enemy of the church: “Like ravens we have gathered around the carcass of cheap grace. From it we have imbibed the poison which has killed the following of Jesus among us.”5 It is also “that grace we bestow on ourselves.”6 It functions as a pass allowing the Christian to live in the same manner as before.
