The warning is given in the first person plural to “we” who sin “after receiving knowledge of the truth” (10:26b). The author of Hebrews assumes that his listeners would agree that they had received the word of God (2:3–4) in a manner that constituted enlightenment (6:4; 10:32). This did not mean that Christians no longer needed to learn (cf. 5:11–6:3) or that they were sinless—the author has encouraged them to seek mercy from God (4:16; 7:25).
