We are not the architects of the faith; we are the trustees. Again, this is like an ancient cathedral—we didn’t build it; we can only reverence it and preserve it. So before we attempt to explain the Trinity or Incarnation or Baptism or Communion, we must first reverence these holy mysteries by being astonished at them. Astonished silence precedes apostolic preaching. Without astonishment we lack reverence, and without reverence we are reckless. And we have been reckless with the received faith.
