God the Father isn’t at all like that. He wears the overlay of our life with our earthly parents. (See chapter two, “Seeing God With an Unbelieving Heart.”) Therefore, as soon as the original relief of redemption passes and the Holy Spirit comes, performance-oriented people think in their hearts, below the level of conscious thought, Now I really ought to be able to live up to it! and set themselves to strive to be perfect, not actually for the love of Jesus, but out of the same old carnal fear of
