The terms “kingdom of heaven” and “kingdom of God” can be synonymous, but they have different nuances. For example, in some places where Mark uses the expression “Kingdom of God,” Matthew has “Kingdom of heaven.” In Mark 1:15, Jesus proclaims, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news” (italics added). Matthew likely used the Gospel of Mark as a source, and in Matthew 3:2, we see a bit of Matthew’s editing. Here, the Baptist says,
