Sabbath “is holy to the LORD” (v. 15). It is set aside for the Lord in a special way. It is observed in a way that makes it acceptable and pleasing in the sight of God. The ways in which we observe the Sabbath determine the extent to which it is holy to the Lord. Throughout Scripture, the meaning of Sabbath keeps shifting and expanding. Here in Exodus 31 we see its covenantal dimension highlighted for the first time and its holiness dimension expanded. Group Meditation 1.Read aloud Exod 31:12–17.
