“This attending, this waiting, this reverential posture,” Peterson continues, “is at the core of the life of faith, the life of prayer, the life of worship, the life of witness.”42 It is not tangential to worship, nor is it peripheral to our knowledge of God. When poets slow us down, when they ask us to read it again and again and again, they are reminding us of a fundamental virtue of faithful worship. Faithful worship is not like a grocery list—something to get through as efficiently as possible.
