It’s the times when God seems distant that are precisely what make our functional gods so appealing, because for the most part we can get to them. They’re available. We can dial them up, order them in, grab them out of the fridge, manipulate them to come over, or whatever we can think of. We’d rather have the golden calf we can at least stare at and maybe wish into life, as opposed to believing in and standing upon a God we can’t always sense.
