Salvation is a free gift of God, and it cannot be merited by our good behavior (Rom. 3:22–24). Grace declares that salvation is not the culmination of humanity’s quest for God but that it resides in the initiative of God toward men and women (Eph. 1:4–7). Even our faith is a gift of God (Eph. 2:8–9), and, as a matter of fact, all of life is such (James 1:17).
