the living God” (v. 16). Peter gets it, at least at that moment—the glorious truth of the deity of Christ. The reason Peter gets it is the same reason any of us gets any spiritual truth: it has been revealed to him by the Father (v. 17). On the heels of Peter’s great profession comes the first mention in Matthew’s Gospel of the church. The truth of who Jesus is leads to the promise that he will build and preserve his church (v. 18).
