Jonah had gone outside the city to seek his comfort and nurse his personal anger; in contrast, Jesus went outside the city to yield to the anger of his crucifiers. Nailed to the cross, he bore the wrath of God for the sins of mankind—for all who repent, urban and non-urban. Thus he proved forever, for you and me, the vastness of God’s pity and love for “that great city” . . . and for every great city. God’s grace is greater than any city, greater than all our anger, greater than all our running away.
