Repentance means returning to a spirit of creatureliness before the Creator in recognition of his mercy to penitent believers (Deut. 30:11-20). Ungodliness is thus rejected and righteousness is embraced. In the Old Testament this spirit of repentance is created by a sense of who God is and by an awareness of the true character of sin. It is a God-centered response, indeed the beginning of true God-centeredness. Turning away from
