Even though we have unfolded the three approaches—appropriation, adaptation, and intentional design—in sequential fashion, it would be a mistake to see these three approaches in a strict chronological manner. Although the early decades emphasized the first two approaches, there are still congregations that use appropriation and adaptation to find a home for their contemporary services. None of the three approaches has gone away. Notwithstanding which approach has been used, certain qualities have
