Stone argued that the death of Christ displayed first and foremost the love of God for sinners and that the atonement was intended to move human beings to repentance and holy living.5 This notion left Stone open to charges of ‘‘works righteousness,’’ a theme his critics played on again and again over the years. But these critics were wrong. Stone's view of the atonement actually reflected his belief in the power of the grace of God to transform a human life. This is not to suggest that Campbell did
