People lived by faith day to day, accepting both blessings and hardships. Life was fragile; safety was not considered a foundational human right. It wasn’t hard to imagine a suffering Christ choosing to love and forgive in the midst of pain and turmoil. When visiting America, I found myself wondering how a church elder could occupy an entire dinner conversation in his large and beautiful house with talk about the challenges of the stock market and maintaining a clean swimming pool. Didn’t he realize
