him and sought to devour him (22:12–13, 16). He was exhausted. His strength was gone (22:14–15). The piercing of his hands and feet and the casting of lots for his clothing are not elaborated on in Scripture but proved prophetic in that they were fulfilled in Jesus’s suffering (22:16, 18; see Matt 27:35; Isa 53:5; Zech 12:10). 22:19–21a David pleads with God to be near and to rescue him from those who wish him harm (22:19–20), again comparing his enemies to beasts: dogs, lions, and wild oxen (22:20–21a).
