John’s statement, “I love all of you in the truth,” is emphatic (i.e., “I, myself, love …”). He truly loves them. “Love” also is a present tense verb denoting continuous action. Love and truth, as we noted earlier, dominate this letter in verses 1–6 by virtue of the number of times each word occurs. John expresses his love for this local body of believers in the context of truth, a love that is grounded in truth and shared by all who know the truth. Further, this truth abides or
