Priscilla’s name is mentioned first in Acts 18, a phenomenon that cannot be accidental or meaningless (vv. 18, 26). Her importance in a survey of women in the church, however, stems especially from the particular instance of her teaching Apollos. It is important to assess the significance of this correctly, especially because some years later Paul was to write Timothy that he did not permit women to teach or to arrogate authority to themselves over men (1 Tim. 2:12). Those who hold that Scripture
