He exposed the bankruptcy of nineteenth century Protestant thought and thus served as a corrective; his stress on Christology called Protestantism back to a central tenet of its faith; and the broad richness of his thought coupled with a fiery compassion for the truth of the gospel has set a standard for theologians yet to be matched in the latter half of the century.
