“Can you stop sinning? How’s your braking system?” Such no-joy mystiques make would-be converts doubt that they have brakes enough to be a Christian. These reluctant converts should not be asked “Can you put the brakes on your sin life?” but “Where do you want to go in life?” These then must be told that Christ is there to help them steer into the future God has for them. Evangelicals for most of their history have had a curious emphasis on the brakes rather than on the steering wheel. They are forever
