bankruptcy, accidents, murder, near apostasy—anything. However, insisting that all spiritual people will suffer, I must point out, is not the same thing as insisting that happiness should not be our concern. I believe it should. I can’t quite see valuing unhappiness. And I certainly wouldn’t follow someone who promised only to make me miserable. In fact, a sensible theology of suffering affirms our desire to be happy. What I am saying is that our ideas about happiness need a major overhaul, and that only the
