Beware, then, the guru, no matter how well pedigreed, with a complete system that explains personal problems fully and tells Christian helpers exactly what to do. Confusion need not be nourished—and about some basics it need not exist—but it should be expected, even welcomed, as we explore what it means to live spiritually in an unspiritual world, or in Nouwen’s words, to focus on the spiritual life. Disappointment, too, is inevitable. More
