Dr. D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones, that great twentieth-century preacher (and posthumous Crossway author) always said of himself that he was a “Bible Calvinist,” not a “System Calvinist.” This has always been my own motto, and as we shall see when we study the Reformation, it is at the heart of the key Protestant distinctive, sola scriptura, or “Scripture alone.” As evangelicals we are Bible Christians, believers not in tradition but centered around what we believe God’s Word to us is teaching.
