And unless we receive time as abundance and gift, not as ration and burden, we’ll never develop a capacity to savor Sabbath. So let’s talk about both, first the Godward orientation, and then the timeward one. First, God. Jewish Sabbath begins in the evening. It begins, in other words, with sleep. Sleep, I already said, is a necessity. But it is also a relinquishment.
