Luke 22:39–46

Christ Prays in Gethsemane

Matt. 26:36–46; Mark 14:32–42; John 18:1

39 kComing out, lHe went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 mWhen He came to the place, He said to them, Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

41 nAnd He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless onot My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 6Then pan angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 qAnd being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, Why rdo you sleep? Rise and spray, lest you enter into temptation.”

Luke 22:39–46 — The New International Version (NIV)

39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down and prayed, 42 Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.” 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”

45 At last he stood up again and returned to the disciples, only to find them asleep, exhausted from grief. 46 Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. Get up and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation.”

45 After that, he got up from prayer and went back to the disciples. He found them sleeping. They were worn out because they were very sad.

46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up! Pray that you won’t fall into sin when you are tempted.”
