Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “The son of David.” He said to them, “How is it then that David, in the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying,

“ ‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet” ’?

If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”

CSBChristian Standard Bible

While the Pharisees were together, Jesus questioned them, “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

They replied, “David’s.”

He asked them, “How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him ‘Lord’:

The Lord declared to my Lord,

‘Sit at my right hand

until I put your enemies under your feet’?

“If David calls him ‘Lord,’ how, then, can he be his son?”

NLTNew Living Translation

Then, surrounded by the Pharisees, Jesus asked them a question: “What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he?”

They replied, “He is the son of David.”

Jesus responded, “Then why does David, speaking under the inspiration of the Spirit, call the Messiah ‘my Lord’? For David said,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

Sit in the place of honor at my right hand

until I humble your enemies beneath your feet.’

Since David called the Messiah ‘my Lord,’ how can the Messiah be his son?”

LEBThe Lexham English Bible

Now while the Pharisees were assembled, Jesus asked them, saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” They said to him, “David’s.” He said to them, “How then does David, by the Spirit, call him ‘Lord,’ saying,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at my right hand

until I put your enemies

under your feet” ’?

If then David calls him ‘Lord,’ how is he his son?”

KJV 1900King James Version

While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool? If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
